The pattern of cooler than normal temperatures continued last week. Temperatures averaged 67.6 degrees which was 2.2 degrees cooler than normal. Growing degree units totaled 123.5 and than was 5 percent below normal. Since May 1 we have accumulated 1869 growing degree units putting us 4 percent below normal. Remember that a lot of corn in our area was not planted until mid to late May and some in early June! We have a long way to go yet to reach maturity!

Rainfall totaled 1.05 inches which was just .09 inches below normal. We have now passed the wettest part of the summer. Normal rainfall decreases each week the rest of the summer and through fall. A 95 day early season corn hybrid planted at SROC has still not dented and the soybeans are in the R4 full pod to R5 beginning seed stage. The corn and soybean crops are booth around 1 stage behind normal. At least 6 more weeks of moderate temperatures and sunshine sure would be nice.
