Looking at the Weekly Weather and Crop Update from the Southern Research and Outreach Center at Waseca it was just what farmers ordered! Yes, sometimes farmers are happy about the weather! Not often but sometimes it does occur! Temperatures averaged 74.3 degrees which was 2 degrees above normal. Growing degree units totaled 170 and that was 15 percent above normal. Since May 1 we have accumulated 1011.5 growing degree units.

Rainfall totaled Only .4 inches and that was .64 inches below normal. However, rainfall varied widely with some areas receiving many inches of rain. The early planted corn grew 2 feet last week and now is almost 6 foot tall. Soybeans are in the R1 or beginning to bloom to R2 or full bloom. Thankfully the weather is cooperating with not only warm temperatures but also not a lot of wind. This has allowed for herbicide applications. Many of the soybean herbicides we use can be applied up to stage R2. Yes, always read and follow label directions!
