North Morristown Still Hoping to Help Church School
The North Morristown Community Club sponsors the patriotic 4th of July event in the rural community each year. World Wars I and II didn't stop it, the pandemic of 1918 and polio epidemic in the mid 1940's didn't halt it.
North Morristown was hoping to have their 128th annual 4th of July observance this year. Organizers decided to keep everyone safe there would be no event due to COVID-19. Initially they were still planning on having fireworks but those hopes were quashed by scheduling conflicts.
Community Club Director Andrew Wagner told KDHL AM Minnesota listeners today the organization is still trying to raise money to assist the Trinity Lutheran Church School. Wagner was a student there, graduating in 1998. He has fond memories of the school.
Wagner says about $20,000 was raised each year by the 4th of July event on the North Morristown celebration grounds and donated to the school. So they are attempting to raise that amount so the school doesn't suffer due to COVID-19.
The head of the committee that puts on the North Morristown 4th of July told us, "A big thank you to Mel Hopman and Tom Grudl from Old Town Tavern. They hosted a fundraiser yesterday. They had a dunk tank. Tom got in it and they were having fun putting him down. He served some hamburgers and chips and we had fresh pies again."
"We sold 33 of them by 6:30 in the evening. It was a great event and they told us we we're receiving all the proceeds. Even a two inch rain didn't damper the event. People came back following the rain and had a good time."
Wagner says, "We're also selling T-Shirts with Uncle Sam on it saying 'I want you to stay safe.' "Those will come in frost red or frost blue in adult sizes small to 4x. The 2x to 4x will be $3 more. The price of the shirts starts at $16. There is a link on our North Morristown 4th of July Celebration Facebook page where you can order these shirts.
"They can be delivered to your house for a little bit of a fee I believe. Also an account has been set up at Lake Country Community Bank in Morristown for donations."
