KDHL and POWER Radio in Faribault invites all our listeners to come to Faribault for a big Heritage Days party this weekend.

The weather forecast is excellent with the wind expected to die down, sunshine during the day and a high temperature in the low 80's predicted for Friday and Saturday.

I stopped down for the Mayor's Reception Thursday and saw Cenral Park bustling with activity.  The musical group Branded Hot Country was excellent.  The food is very good with a terrific variety.

I want to make sure to take time to see the 150th Anniversary Exhibit which will be in Central Park 4:00 p,m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday evening.

I have lived in Faribault since 1987 and honestly love this community because of it's incredible heart for service to others.

The State Schools for the Deaf and Blind.  Internationally reknowned Shattuck-St. Mary's School.  Faribault Regional Center was here when I first arrived and was replaced by a State Correctional Facility.

I have lived in Faribault longer than anywhere else.  19 years growing up in Spring Valley, Mn. A year in the Twin Cities attending Brown Institute and working on Lake Street in downtown Minneapolis.

Then stops in Desoto, Missouri, Ottumwa, Iowa, North Platte, Nebraska, Urbandale, Iowa before answering a blank box ad to come to Faribault.

The intention was not to live here this long but the community is perfectly located within less than an hour drive from all the major sports venues I enjoy along with a great theatre and music scene.

There are garage sales throughout the community this weekend.  Bingo in Central Park is sponsored by the Faribault Emeralds with proceeds supporting Relay for Life Cancer efforts, Infants Remembered in Silence (IRIS) and The Nest at Faribault High School.

Hours are 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday evening for the Bingo.  A Craft Show takes place Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.

Inflatables in Central Park have hours of 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, Noon to 5:00 p.m. Saturday.

Downtown Faribault will be lined with classic vehicles during a Car Cruise from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. that features classic tunes and food and beverages to consume while walking down memory lane.

Smoke Screen provides the music Friday night at the Central Park Band Shell from 8:00 p.m. until Midnight.

The usual Saturday Farmer's Market operates 7:00 a.m. until Noon.  Last week I stopped by for some farm fresh eggs.  The fresher the better when it comes to eggs whether it be for eating breakfast or using in baking.

Donna and Russ Bauer had their homemade sauerkraut last week and Al Spitzack featured his monster radishes.

Soap Box Races take place Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.  it's practice and check-in with races starting 9:00 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church.  The event is sponsored by Christ Lutheran Church.

A Heritage Days tradition has been the Youth Fishing Contest at King Mill Dam from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday.  Kids bring a fishing rod, minnows will be provided.

Every participant will receive a T-shirt courtesy of the Rice County Sport Fishing Association.

Join Larry Ritchie  from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. to learn about the history of the Upper Cannon River Basin.  The local archeologist has spent years researching the area.

He'll talk about how glaciers formed the basin and the role they played in shaping the water ways.

The program takes place in Father Slevin Park and is $5 per person.  You are asked to bring your own lawn chair.  Please register in advance.  To register or get more details call the Rice County Historical Society at 507-332-2121 or email rchs@rchistory.org.

The Kid's Fun Run in North Alexander Park. There is a meeting at 5:30 p.m. followed by the run at 6:00 p.m. Goes from East Entrance to Alexander Park to KWIK  trip on 2nd Ave.

The Kid's Fun Run is always a great start to the Grand Parade which is scheduled to start at 6:15 p.m. and goes from Second Avenue Northwest  to Central Park.  Second Avenue has a number of stretches of shade on both sides of the street.

This year's parade features most of Faribault's living former Mayors as Grand Marshals.

Included are John Jasinski, Jeanette Hammond, Dean Purdie and current Mayor Kevin Voracek.

A couple of them said at the Mayor's Reception when I visited with them that former Mayors no longer with us could not be so honored but they could have been named Honorary Grand Marshals and photos of each could have been on a float or something.

That might have actually been cool

Following the parade enjoy music in Central Park from 8:00 p.m. to Midnight featuring 5 Minute Major.

The Beer Garden opens Noon Saturday

There is a special Ecumenical Service Sunday, June 13, 2022  at the Cathedral of Our Merciful Saviour at 10:00 a.m.  Strawberry Shortcake will be served following the service.
