2020 “Peace Officer of the Year” Named by Steele County Exchange Club

On Friday, February 21, the Exchange Club of Steele County recognized their 2020 "Peace Officer of the Year" during their regular meeting that morning. Steele County Sheriff's Deputy Tony David was presented this year's award.

Deputy David has been with the Sheriff's Department since December of 1998 and works in the Civil Process Division of the Sheriff's Office. He also handles the responsibilities with the pharmaceutical disposal program in Steele County. He was the D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) officer for 10 years in the New Richland, Ellendale, and Medford Schools. He has assisted with Safety Camp here in Owatonna for 20 years.

I have known Tony for over 10 years, since my family became involved with Special Olympics, first knowing him as a coach, now as a member of the management team. To say he has been involved with Special Olympics doesn't quite do it justice. He has been a coach, he is a member of the management team, and a great advocate for the organization. He has also been with the Owatonna Knight's of Columbus since June of 2015. In his role with the KC's he has worked on the Smokin' in Steele BBQ and Blues Festival; a fundraiser which donates money to Special Olympics in Owatonna, and helps out with the numerous benefit breakfasts they put on.

Tony has also lent his help to the Polar Plunge when we had it in town, and has been in the lighted parade in Downtown Owatonna with the Bear from the Plunge.

To say Tony is involved in his community and County is understating the obvious. Congratulations Tony, you deserve it!
