The Nimrod, MN Miracle, A Cool Story
I take the trip up to Detroit Lakes often in the summer months. Maybe, I have the sense of humor of a 12 year old, but I always chuckle a little when drive by the Nimrod sign. I remember thinking the first time I saw the sign "why would any town name itself Nimrod?"
Turns out Nimrod is a biblical character that was a great hunter. So, it has nothing to do with the modern day use of the term nimrod, which means kind of a dolt.
Nimrod is a small town of around 70 people. And most of those gather at the one bar in town.
Anyway, there's a nice heart tugging story about something that happened in Nimrod. I'm not sure exactly when this story took place but it's a legendry story in this small community.
It seems an out of town stranger, a young woman, stopped into Nimrod's only bar to have a beer. Sitting next to a guy, she noticed he had a fistula in his arm. A fistula is used to hook a person up to dialysis.
After talking to the man about his kidney problems and finding out his kidneys were pretty much shot and a transplant would be needed to save his life, this woman left that bar with a mission.

She went home and took several tests and found she was a perfect match for a kidney transplant. Having taken the ailing man's information before leaving the bar, she contacted the man and offered up one of her kidneys.
What a great story. She stopped for a beer and ending up changing a person's life. The world needs more people just like her.
If you ever have the desire to experience Nimrod, just head north on highway 10 for an hour or so. About 10 minutes this side of Wadena, you'll see the Nimrod sign that points you in the right direction.
While you are there, be sure to stop into the bar and maybe you'll have your own Nimrod experience.
