Joan Ocampo-Yambing, 19, of Rosemount, went to Creighton University in Omaha. She was about ready to begin her sophomore year. She was a computer science major and was getting ready to self publish a book of poetry. Her life ended on Monday on Interstate 80.

Traffic was backed up because of all the people checking out the eclipse. Joan was in a Toyota Prius in the back seat and riding with other students when a semi truck failed to stop and struck the vehicle, according to Omaha police.

The truck then hit another car and came to rest on top of it. And that car hit the back of a roll-off trailer.

Ocampo-Yambing died at the hospital. Three other students in the Prius and two people in the other car were also taken to the hospital. Their injuries were rated from serious to critical.
