The Olmsted County Attorney’s Office filed the charges in connection with the December shooting on Thursday. Rochester police responded to Olmsted County Medical Center on the evening of December 3 after being advised of a man checking in with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Court documents say a witness told an officer he had picked 25-year-old Zackery Morton and said Morton was assembling a rifle while the two were heading to a friend's house. The witness reported hearing the sound of metal coming together and then a loud noise.
The man then reported seeing that Morton had shot himself in the foot. The witness said he and Morton went back to Morton’s residence to drop off the firearm then went to Olmsted County Medical Center for treatment, according to the criminal complaint.
A second witness told police he had been drinking tequila with Morton when a friend came to pick Morton up. The witness said the friend then came running back into the residence after the two had left saying Morton had shot himself.
Officers spoke with Morton while he was at Olmsted County Medical Center. He told police he had been cleaning the rifle at his friend’s house when the firearm discharged a round into his foot.
The criminal complaint says the officer believed Morton was intoxicated during the interview. Officers then went to a residence in the 2200 block of Parkview Ln. Southeast where they confiscated the firearm.
Prosecutors have charged Morton with a felony count of intentional discharge of a firearm that endangered public safety and a misdemeanor charge of reckless handling of a firearm. His first appearance in the case is set for May 9.
