A wide range of topics were discussed at today’s Rice County Board of Commissioners Committee of the Whole Work Session in the Government Services Building in Faribault.

Commissioner Galen Malecha requested a special work session dealing with landfill issues in light of the recent landfill fire.

The Northfield Commissioner wants to see a plastic ban passed and said currently it’s not legal to implement one.

Commissioner Jim Purfeerst agreed with having the meeting and added.

Malecha encouraged fellow commissioners to lobby regional landfill committees to get a plastic bags ban.

Information Technology Director Allan Klug informed the board cybersecurity is their top priority.

Klug added the new Public Safety Center will bring more safety to the county system.

Commissioners also addressed a topic they have discussed at the last few work sessions and regular meetings.  Having more public input at meetings.

It appears July 11th they will have their first open forum before a meeting beginning at 8:00 a.m.

There was a suggestion to have the open forum at 8:30 a.m. and start the meeting at 9:00 a.m.

All commissioners said they preferred an early start but did not rule out moving later prompting Commissioner Galen Malecha to suggest.

A formal adoption of the policy will be up for consideration at their regular meeting next week.
