Tom Carlson grew up in the Mora, Minnesota area and remembers when he was a young man always being curious about the nature surrounding him.  It's probably no surprise then that Carlson would eventually become a native seed stock gatherer.  Carlson was a guest on the KDHL AM Minnesota program and told listeners he would like to find someone to help him fill a large order before the snow flies.

Carlson says the pay is about $100 a day.  He pays for the lodging and the meals and typically you work seven days a week.  It's not easy work he says, in fact it can be hard with long hours.  If it rains or snows and seeds can't be gathered that day he says the assistant would still receive their wages.  Carlson searches for whatever he receives orders for.

He has worked for the Wisconsin DNR and U.S. Forest Service but mostly nurseries in search of various native seeds.  He is currently collecting hazel nuts and linden tree seeds.
