Undated (KROC AM News) -  The name of a Minnesota police officer who was struck and killed by a car has been added to the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC.

Thousands of officers attended Sunday night’s vigil at the National Mall to honor officers from around the country who have died in the line of duty.

Bill Mathews was killed last year while clearing debris from a road in Wayzata.

He was a graduate of Pine Island High School. Early in his law enforcement career, Matthews was an intern for the Rochester Police Department and worked part-time for the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office.

The vigil marked the beginning of National Police Week. National Peace Officers Memorial Day will be observed Tuesday.
