[WATCH] Minnesota Fire Marshal Shows How Not to Cook a Turkey
There are many ways one can prepare a turkey for Thanksgiving, but this is definitely one way you do NOT want to do it.
The firefighters over at the Minnesota State Fire Marshal's office have a few timely reminders as we all get set to get that turkey into the oven-- or deep fryer-- for Thanksgiving. Specifically, reminders of what NOT to do when you're deep-frying a turkey, as the video below shows.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Fire Administration also noted that Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, and has posted a few things to keep in mind if you're going to fire up the fryer instead of the oven:
Five dangers of deep-frying a turkey:
+ Turkey fryers can easily tip over spilling hot oil across a large area.
+ An overfilled cooking pot will cause oil to spill over when the turkey is placed inside.
+ A partially frozen turkey will cause hot oil to splatter.
+ Turkey fryers can easily overheat and start a fire.
+ The pot, lid and handles of a turkey fryer can get dangerously hot and cause burn injuries.
So, while I've heard that deep-fried turkey is AMAZING, after watching the video below, I'm just going to 'settle' for having some Thanksgiving turkey roasted in the oven-- that my sister-in-law will masterfully prepare.
Whichever way you celebrate Thanksgiving, and whatever you're having, have a safe and happy holiday!
