A fatal car crash was reported by the Steele County Sheriff's Office Thursday afternoon. A preliminary investigation from the scene points to a probable head-on collision of two vehicles, one traveling North on Lemond Road, the other traveling South.

According to a Steele County Sheriff's Office media release, the fatal crash was reported at 2:55 Thursday afternoon as law enforcement and emergency personnel responded to the 3600 block of Lemond Road in Steele County.

Upon arrival at the scene, responders found two vehicles had crashed resulting in extensive damage to both vehicles. Both vehicles were occupied by only the drivers. One driver had to be extricated from their vehicle.

The Steele County Sheriff's Office release states that "extensive life-saving measures were performed by medical personnel on the scene; however, the party was pronounced dead as a result of injuries suffered in the crash."

The other driver was taken by ambulance to the hospital. The initial investigation shows one vehicle was traveling north and the other south on Lemond Road at the time of the crash.

The case remains under investigation by the Minnesota State Patrol, Steele County Sheriff's Office, and the Steele County Coroner's Office.

Emergency responders who also responded to the scene were the Minnesota State Patrol, Mayo Ambulance, Mayo Air Care, and the Owatonna Fire Department.
