Snow Week Royalty; Owatonna Students to Return to Class

Owatonna High School is celebrating their annual tradition of Snow Week despite the general different feel of the school year. An in-person talent show is coming up Friday, March 12. For tickets contact gtratz@isd761.org. It will also be viewable through Owatonna Live. Funds raised will benefit Rachel's Light. OHS National Honor Society is organizing the event.

The OHS Magnet student news source announced the finalists for Snow Week king and queen. They include Maggie Newhouse, Haylee Mullenbach, Anna Herzog, Emily Hagen, Sky Dube, Shamso Abdullahi, Sam Snitker, Caleb Schuler, Nicholas Pilcher, Gannon Kuehn, Aaron Bangs, and Hudson Aase.

Other candidates included Morgan Winter, Hailey Rysavy, Allison Keller, Margret Jacott, Skylah Conner, Brianna Bailey, Cade Woltman, Dominic Valento, Gavin Rein, Wyatt Oldefendt, Casey Johnson, and Brody Homan.

OWATONNA STUDENTS WILL GO TO A FOUR-DAY WEEK

The Magnet reports the Owatonna Public School district "came to the conclusion that (grades) 6-12 would start a four-day school week on March 30." The decision came at a February 25 meeting and the topic was discussed by the board on February 22 as well.

Superintendent Jeff Elstad is quoted by the Magnet, "We still need to be careful, we still need to follow the strategies that are in place because if our numbers tick up quickly in Steele County again, we will shift back to distance learning."

OHS INSTRUCTOR UP FOR MN TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Owatonna's reigning Teacher of the Year, Jessica Wagner, is nominated for the statewide honor. Wagner is the Magnet advisor and teaches English, Public Speaking and Journalism. She tells the Magnet, "My favorite part of teaching is the connections and community that I get to make with my students and colleagues."

OHS STUDENT NAMED TO US YOUTH SENATE PROGRAM

Owatonna High School junior Fardouza Farah "has been selected as one of only two students to represent Minnesota as a delegate to the United States Senate Youth Program," according to a press release from the school district.

Fardouza is involved in Student Council, National Honor Society, Mock Trial, Speech and statewide advocacy groups.

She told the OHS Magnet, "I am leading a political campaign to pass a law in Minnesota, making our state more accommodating to sexual assault survivors; I have met with over 20 state house representatives and Minnesota state senators." Read the full Magnet posting, written by Haylee Mullenbach.
