Minnesota Retains U.S. House Seats in 2020 Apportionment

The United States Census Bureau released 2020 population results for each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico Monday.

In a news release it is explained, "Apportionment is the process of dividing the 435 memberships, or seats, in the U.S. House of Representatives among the 50 states.  At the conclusion of each decennial census, the results are used to calculate the number of seats to which each state is entitled.  Each of the 50 states is entitled to a minimum  of one seat in the U.S. House of Representatives."

Minnesota did not gain or lose any seats.  There was concern before the 2020 Census that Minnesota could lose a seat.  The following states do lose a seat.

• Michigan
• Pennsylvania
• New York
• West Virginia
• Ohio
• Illinois
• California

The following states gained a seat thanks to more residents moving into their states.

• Colorado
• Oregon
• Montana
• Texas (gained 2 seats)
• Florida
• North Carolina

The 2020 US Census for Minnesota showed a 7.6 percent gain in population to 5,706,494 residents.

In 2010 there was a 7.8 percent growth, 2000 a 12.4 percent gain,1990 the population was up 7.3 percent to 4,375,099.

The population of the District of Columbia is not included in the apportionment population.

Minnesota has 8 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Every region gained in population but the strongest growth occurred in the south (10.2%) and west (9.2%).

4. North Dakota 15.8%
5. Nevada 15.0%

The following areas had a decrease in population between 2010 and 2020.

1. Puerto Rico      -11.8%
2. West Virginia     -3.2%
3. Mississippi        -0.2%
4. Illinois               -0.1%

The District of Columbia gained 14.6% more residents, Hawaii 7%, Alaska 3.3%.

According to 2020 US Census results 4 states have over 20 million residents.

United States population is 331,449,281 up 7.4 percent over the last decade.  The second slowest decade of growth since the census began.

Puerto Rico population is 3,285,874.
