Hayfield Rolls, K-W Frenzied Comeback Falls Short

The Hayfield Vikings turned a 13 point halftime lead into running time in the second half with a 67-29 win over the Houston Hurricanes in Section 1A Quarterfinal round action at the Mayo Civic Auditorium Monday night.

In the second game Lanesboro went on a 5-0 run to end the first half against Kenyon-Wanamingo to take a 26-18 lead into the locker room.

The Burros came out in the second half and held the Knights to one field goal the first five and a half minutes to take a commanding double digit lead.  K-W made a incredible comeback to get the game into a shot away from a lead or tying but Lanesboro hit free throws down the stretch and won 58-48.

The Minnesota Basketball News #3 Class A ranked Hayfield Vikings looked a bit off in the first half.  Particularly in the shooting department.  The Houston Hurricanes you might recall were the defending Section 1A Champions after defeating Hayfield last year.

The Hurricanes were without two starters so for the #8 seed to hang with the top seed as long as they did is a testament to how tenacious they are.

No Houston players scored double digits but eighth grader 5'7 Avery Kingsley finished the night with 8 points and junior 5'10 guard Sydney Torgerson also had 8 points.  Junior 5'8 Lilly Carr added 6 points.

Hayfield had two players in double figures with 8 players scoring in the lopsided game.

Sophmore 5'10 Natalie Beaver led all scorers with 24 points.  Beaver had one three point basket, was 3 of 5 from the free throw line.  Classmate 5'4 Kristen Watson had 18 points with two three point baskets and hit 2 of 3 free throws.

Junior 5'8 Josanne Tempel added two three point baskets as part of her 8 points.

The bench erupted when senior 5'4 Kenna O'Connor buried a three late in the Vikings victory.

The Vikings scored 27 points off 32 Houston turnovers.

Hayfield now 29-0 will play Lanesboro 19-8 Saturday 4:00 p.m. in the Auditorium to see who advances to the title game next Thursday.

Kenyon-Wanamingo Head Coach Jake Wieme has to be very proud of his team because they never quit.

The difference in the game was free throws.  The Burros were 13 of 20.  K-W 4 of 7 from the charity stripe.

We said before the game the Milo Peterson Ford of Kenyon Keys to the Game for the Knights would be rebounds and turnovers.

The Burros have two 6'0 juniors in their lineup. In particular Kaci Ruen dominated on the glass, finishing with 13 points and probably double digit rebounds,  Jessie Schreiber tallied 10 points.   They controlled the glass in the first half but not as much in the second half.

Senior 5'1 Malia Tessum nailed down 3 triples in the game finishing with 14 points.

K-W was led by sophmore Josie Flom with 15 points including 4 three point baskets.

Senior 5'10 Stella Rechtzigel had 13 points.  Junior 5'8 Tessa Erlandson also had 13 points for the Knights.

Rechtzigel and the other senior on the team Julia Dahl were our Held Bus Service of Kenyon Knights of the game.

Flom received our Cashwise Foods and Pharmacy of Owatonna delivery of the game with her scoring performance.

The #5 seed Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights finished their season with a 12-14 record.

#2 seed Kingsland plays #15 Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday and #3 Grand Meadow faces #6 Rushford-Peterson 7:30 p.m. tomorrw in the Rochester Mayo Civic Auditorium.

In the Arena Class 1AA Tournament action took place with top seed Goodhue defeating Chatfield 80-53.  Elisabeth Gadient had 31 points to lead the Wildcats with teammates Tori Miller and Anika Schafer adding 18 and 12 respectively.

In the other contest #5 seed Lake City got by #4 Dover-Eyota 62-59 in an overtime thriller.

The Tigers and Wildcats collide 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Auditorium.

Tuesday games in the Arena will be #2 Rochester Lourdes tangling with #7 Caledonia at 6:00 p.m. and  #3 Cotter/Hope Lutheran plays #6 Plainview-Elgin-Millville.

Those winners are scheduled to play 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Auditorium.
