More than $2.3 million in FEMA disaster assistance has been approved to help homeowners and renters in Rice, Steele, Waseca, Blue Earth, Le Sueur, Freeborn and Hennepin counties who were affected by the storms and flooding in September.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency issued a news release today saying residents of those counties who have suffered loss or damage have until January 30 to register with FEMA. If you don't register, you are not able to receive federal money.

The FEMA news release says 1,330 people have registered for disaster assistance in those counties.

As of Jan. 26, FEMA approved 605 individuals and households for disaster-recovery grants, including

  • More than $2.1 million for housing grants, including short-term rental assistance and home-repair costs;
  • More than $166,900 to cover other essential disaster-related needs such as medical and dental expenses and lost personal possessions.
