Faribault Baseball Suffers Heartbreak at Bell Field

The Faribault Falcons baseball team took a two run lead into the final inning of their Big Nine Conference game against Red Wing at Bell Field Thursday night and lost 7-6.  The Falcons led 6-4 going into the 7th inning.  Two Faribault pitchers combined for 9 walks and 4 Falcons errors spelled doom for the hometown team.

Many of the Faribault softball players were in attendance because their game at Red Wing was postponed. They were a vociferous bunch encouraging their team.  Falcons Senior Joe Palmer started on the mound going 5 2/3 innings, allowing 5 hits, 4 runs, 1 earned, struck out 4 and walked 7 batters.

Palmer threw 107 pitches, 50 were strikes.  Freshman Hunter Nelson finished the game and took the tough luck loss.  Over the final 1 1/3 innings Nelson allowed 1 hit, 3 runs, 1 earned.  He walked 2 and struck out 2.  Nelson threw 42 pitches, 23 strikes.

The Wingers had 0 errors in the game while cranking out 6 hits.  Faribault had 11 hits in the 2 hour 20 minute game, Red Wing 6 hits.

The Falcons were led at the plate by Maverick Jeanes, Joe Palmer, Andy Prange each with two hits.  Sophomore catcher Jordan Nawrocki tallied 3 hits including a double.

The Wingers left 16 runners on the base paths while Faribault 8 on base.  No Red Wing player had more than 1 hit in the game.

Falcons Head Coach Charlie Lechtenberg told KDHL it was nice to see the bats get going in the game but so far this season when they've achieved good pitching or good defensive the hitting hasn't been there.  "We just can't seem to get all phases of the game clicking at the same time."

Faribault goes to Wartburg College Saturday to make up their season opening doubleheader with Hutchinson on the artificial surface.  The Tigers are in the same section so it's a big game for seed purposes.

In other Big Nine baseball Thursday Mankato East rolled over Rochester Mayo 12-0.  Owatonna downed Northfield 10-3 while putting up crooked numbers innings two through five.  The Huskies had 13 hits and 3 errors.  The Raiders 7 hits, 5 errors.
