Maplewood, MN (KROC-AM News) - The owners of the dogs involved in an attack on an 11-year-old boy in Maplewood have decided to euthanize the pit bulls.

That information was included in a statement issued Wednesday afternoon by the Maplewood Public Safety Department. The news release says the dogs were seized and placed into quarantine after the attack Tuesday afternoon, which occurred as the boy was walking home from school. Officials say he ended up suffered serious, but apparently non-life threatening, bite wounds

A 72-year-old neighbor suffered a bite wound on his arm when he saw what was happening and interceded by kicking the dogs in an effort to break off the attack. Maplewood police are also reporting a woman passerby finally managed to drive off the pit bulls by hitting them with an umbrella.

An investigation into the incident determined the dogs had been left in a fenced yard but escaped because a gate was left unlatched.
