This is a disturbing story, in the sense that it shows how greed can take people with the best of intentions and show how selfish and judgemental they can get.

Johnny Bobbitt was a homeless man who came across Kate McClure stranded on a highway overpass after she ran out of gas. He gave her his last $20, and she and her boyfriend, Mark D'Amico started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Bobbitt.

Everything so far seems to sound so good. The GoFundMe campaign raised $400,000 and that's when things got out of control. According to several news sources, which have been shared and re-shared on social media, the couple did not immediately turn the money over to Bobbitt, claiming he is a drug addict and will just waste the money. Bobbitt has admitted to using drugs, but, that's not the point of this story.

The couple has given Bobbitt some of the money, bought him a truck and camper of some sort, which was on their property, then they took it back. They have also gone on vacations and bought a BMW after the money was raised. They have not been charged with fraud, they have only been accused of mishandling the money, and their BMW has been seized. Bobbitt's attorney has said that there is nothing left of the money raised, and his client was only given $25,000.

I believe that the GoFundMe campaign started out with the best of intentions, and things got out of control when the couple who set it up saw how much money was being donated. That amount of cash could be tempting to almost anyone. However, the money was raised for the benefit of Bobbitt. They should have given him the lump sum, minus the fees that GoFundMe takes, and not put any conditions on it. It is not their job to be his protector or parental figure, he is a grown man.

Greed, it can happen to anyone, and I think this story is a great warning to those who would like to help out others. Either help them with cash, no strings, or buy them what is needed if you're concerned about how they will spend the money. And, don't change the rules in the middle of the game.
