Cannon Falls Volleyball Outlasts Kenyon-Wanamingo
The Cannon Falls Bombers tenacity served them well Thursday night in a 3-2 win over the Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights in the Bombers Hangar.
The Knights won the first set 25-22, Bombers won sets two and three 25-20, 25-22, K-W set four 25-12 before a 15-11 Cannon Falls victory in the fifth set.
I thought the Bombers block was the difference in the match. It was very good and had to be against Knights hitters, seniors 5'10 Ally Peterson and 5'10 Julianna Boyum. Cannon Falls had 27 total blocks and K-W 19. It's rare to see a winning team commit twice as many errors but unofficially that's what I had happen in set one.
Kenyon-Wanamingo had 10 errors and Cannon Falls 5 mistakes in a 25-22 Knights win. Knights Head Coach Jen Nerison always tells us among the Milo Peterson Ford of Kenyon keys to the match are limiting errors.
Bottom line it appeared Cannon Falls was better playing what I like to call in scramble mode. What the coaches like to call out of system.
Bombers Junior 5'6 outside hitter Mikayla Bowen had 10 kills and 15 digs and was the definition of tenacity on the court. Numerous times when it looked like K-W was going to win a point Bowen would keep the ball alive or simply direct it to a hole.
Senior 6'1 Shayla Hustad and sophomore 6'2 Halle Hustad combined for 25 kills and 15 blocks for Cannon Falls. Shayla finished with 14 kills, 6 blocks. Halle had 11 kills, 9 blocks. Shayla added 4 ace serves.
Sophomore setter 5'6 Jaci Winchell was another difference maker with 46 assists, 17 digs and 7 blocks in the five set thriller. Senior 5'11 Sara Twedt added 5 kills, 5 blocks.
The Knights were led by Peterson with 22 kills, 16 digs. Boyum had 15 kills, 19 digs. Boyum added 3 ace serves and 5 blocks.
Senior 5'9 Madi Luebke tallied 25 assists, 12 digs. Senior 5'7 Riley Dummer totaled 17 assists, 10 digs. Junior 6'1 Haley Lerfald led the Knights block with 7 ace blocks.
Our Held Bus Service of Kenyon Knights of the match were Peterson, Boyum and Lerfald.
Cannon Falls sophomore libero 5'5 Bree Robinson added 22 digs, 3 ace serves.
The Bombers are now 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the Hiawatha Valley League. Kenyon-Wanamingo falls to 2-2 in the conference, 5-2 overall.
