Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  The attorney for the former Kasson police officer who has been charged with sexually abusing children over a  period of 20 years wants his bail reduced so he can get out of jail and get medical treatment.

When 51-year-old Julio Baez was arraigned in Olmsted County Court two weeks ago, his conditional bail was set at $500,000. His attorney is seeking to have it reduced to $100,000, saying she “has never seen bail this high for these charges.”

Her letter to the court says Baez was shot nine times in early June and his wounds need “regular care and dressing, a minimum of twice daily.” The letter says Baez is only receiving one change per day in jail and that “his wounds are currently infected.”

The captain in charge of the Olmsted County Adult Detention Operations says Baez is receiving appropriate treatment by her medical staff. Macey Tesmer says if his condition became serious,  Baez would be taken to an appropriate outside medical provider.

The bail reduction request may be taken up when Baez appears in court for another hearing on Friday.

If he does post bail, Baez would likely be taken into custody by Dodge County authorities. He was charged in Dodge County Court last Friday with sexually abusing three juveniles. Because he was in jail in Olmsted County, he was not arraigned and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
