Blooming Prairie senior golfers Jessica Ressler, Halle Strunk and Maggie Bruns will share one more prep sporting event before moving on to their summer plans and college in the fall. The three qualified for the state golf tournament this week. A practice round is set for Monday with the event running Tuesday and Wednesday, June 15-16 at Pebble Creek in Becker.

Just two years ago, the last time there was a high school golf season, the Blooming Prairie girls team had one golfer. Not one golfer going to state. One golfer. This season they ran away with the Gopher Conference championship and have three golfers at state.

Ressler earned the section individual championship after coming back out for golf. Strunk is the lone returning golfer from the previous season and took fifth at sections. Playing golf was not in Bruns' plans until a mishap on the basketball court.

BP coach Carl Peterson says Strunk and Ressler were a solid one-two this spring, "They were first and second in the conference and darn near tied all yearlong and Jessica ended up tying for first at the section meet. And then Halle was fifth."

Regarding Bruns, Peterson said, "Her improvement has been outstanding during the year. When she started out really almost having a hard time hitting the ball forward. And now she shot well enough to make it to state within that month-and-a-half." [Hear Peterson's full interview below.]

Bruns has made the best of a tough situation. She suffered a concussion during a basketball game this past winter, leading to a seizure. She was not able to play her usual spring sport, softball. So she started playing competitive golf. Bruns had little golf experience before this spring and has chopped 40 strokes off her scores from the beginning of the season.
