Tyler Farr Says New Song ‘I Should Go to Church …’ Is About Redemption
Tyler Farr admits he thought of himself first while listening to his new single for the first time. "I Should Go to Church Sometime" is a song about redemption, but also a reminder to be more gracious.
Farr's latest single is his deepest yet, and the heart of it made him feel a little guilty. The "Redneck Crazy" singer admits some may not get the message the first time through, and that's fine with him. These kind of songs drive country music, he says. It nearly caught him off guard in the weeks and months after he recovered from vocal surgery.
"I'm like, 'I need to realize how far we've come,'" he says. "'That we were in a 12 passenger van ... five years ago and (I'm) very blessed — if I don't ever have another hit again — I'm very blessed to have the three I do."
Farr's wife of six months helps him put his worries in perspective. "My wife's a critical care nurse and I'll come home and be griping," he says. "She's like, 'My patient died today. I had her for a week.' And she starts to tear up and I'm like, 'Okay, I'm a jerk.'"
Brinley Addington, Michael Hardy and Sarah Turner co-wrote "I Should Go to Church Sometime," the kickoff single from Farr's upcoming third studio album. Jason Aldean was named as the album's producer originally, but Farr says he didn't produce this song. In fact, he only ended up with two songs on the album, which is finished. There are other songs that will reflect the big ballads on his 2015 Suffer in Peace album. To that end, "I Should Go to Church ..." is reflective.
"It's not even so much about about what religion you are or if you're not religious," Farr says. "It pretty much comes down to redemption. And that's something that everybody should relate to."
In addition to working on new music and a schedule full of live shows (including a June stop at the Taste of Country Music Festival), Farr will be debuting his new reality show this summer.
