Sunday morning I had about 35 acres of corn to harvest and I called in the cavalry, not on horses but a big green machine. This week I will be heading to the National FFA Convention in Louisville, so I wanted to get done. In the past corn harvest went faster because my dad helped by running the combine a little bit. It is a sad fall because my dad is in hospice and will pass soon from cancer. It was time to be done so I called my cousin Chad to come and help.

My John Deere 7720 was a big combine in the 1980s when it was built. I have a six-row corn head on it, and with the great corn yields I was traveling about 1.2 mph. Chad's combine has an eight-row head on it and he was traveling about 3.2 mph. I was kept busy hauling corn! While we were combining I had a neighbor with one of the biggest combines made today. He had a 12-row head on it moving at 3-4 mph! Throw in a grain cart and few trucks and it is incredible how much corn can be harvested in a day.
