At age 24, Mollie Jean Mahowald of Lakeville had served her country in two tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan as a vehicle mechanic with the 1135th Combat Support Company out of Faribault. She was working on being a veterinary technician. All of that came to an end when she died after she was struck by a motorcycle in Elko-New Market. And the driver of that motorcycle left the scene. He was arrested later on Sunday.

The criminal complaint states Matthew Hartley had a revoked license due to a DWI conviction this past July and another DWI charge pending. He faces up to 30 years in prison and $60,000 in fines connected to the most recent charges.

Mahowald's younger sister Julia arrived on the scene after her sister had died. She got to hold her hand.
