The city of Northfield will be getting a fancy roundabout at the intersection of Hwy 246 and Jefferson Parkway. Why is it "fancy"? Because this isn't just any roundabout, it's going to have tunnels running underneath for pedestrians and bicyclists!

The Star Tribune writes that the Northfield Public Works Director David Bennett said:

4,000 vehicles a day pass through the intersection of Hwy. 246 and Jefferson. The intersection, now controlled by a four-way stop, is near three public schools and a neighborhood with lots of walkers. Traffic backups are common, too, especially at school start and dismissal times.

So this intersection sounds like the perfect candidate for a roundabout with tunnels. It's expected to cost about $3.3 million with the state covering $1.8 million and Northfield paying the rest.

Officials believe that this will be only the second roundabout with tunnels in Minnesota.
