Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn issued a News Release today noting rising water levels on local lakes, rivers and streams prompted the Emergency Water Surface use Restriction.  The Sheriff and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources teamed together to impose the restrictions.

In addition, "Due to the recent heavy rainfall over the last week," the Sheriff noted the decision was made.  This means that all watercraft shall use slow wake restrictions effective April 22, 2019 for no more than 30 days.  This is in an effort to reduce further property damage by reducing shoreline erosion.

Emphasis must be made this is on ALL Rice County waterways.  If you have any questions the Rice County Sheriff's Office phone number is (507)-332-6010.

A wake is the wave a boat or ship leaves behind it as it moves through the water.  The faster the vessel moves, the bigger the wake.

This can cause difficulties for other vessels in the area, especially small ones.  It can also cause problems where the wake reaches the shoreline.

A 'no wake' zone is a legally defined area with a speed limit on boat travel.  The speed limit is only as fast as the boat can go without leaving a wake.
