Propane Shortage, Costs Skyrocket
I filled my propane tank for the corn dryer last summer for about $1.65 a gallon. I needed one more fill late last fall that was not contracted for $2.20 a gallon. Since than propane prices have increased dramatically. Is there price gouging going on with the propane shortage? The problem started last fall with the largest demand for propane to dry corn in history, by a substantial amount. Propane stocks were now lower than normal going into the winter. Than a much colder than normal December and January and here we are. Semi-tankers are going as far as Southern Texas to get a load of propane to haul back to Minnesota. Roger Leider, Director of the Propane Association of Minnesota said it costs about a dollar a gallon to haul propane from Texas to Minnesota.
