Update: The evacuation of Ellendale is now over. Residents may return to their homes. An area about 400 feet directly surrounding the derailment site will remain closed to the public until further notice. Please obey all road closure signs.

Union Pacific Railroad says a 146-car train derailed in Ellendale about 5:45 this morning. At least one car is carrying LP gas and one is carrying butane. Residents within one mile were evacuated. People are going to Ellendale United Methodist Church. Because of the evacuation, the NRHEG school district, (New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva) has canceled classes for the day. Local first responders have requested assistance from the hazmat team from the Rochester Fire Department. The Union Pacific Hazardous materials team is on the scene.

The train was on its way to North Platte, Nebraska. No injuries have been reported.

A unified command has been established with the Steele and Freeborn County Sheriff's office as incident command. The Rochester Chemical Assessment Team is also on the scene.

As of about 9AM the Casey's General Store, which is just off the freeway, ceased the pumping of gasoline as a precaution. Several area residents were forced to go elsewhere after having coffee this morning at Casey's due to Ellendale being shut off.
