Owatonna Girls Hockey: Big Nine Title is All Theirs
To share is good, usually. But the Owatonna High School girls hockey team was not in that sort of a mood Saturday night. The Huskies blanked Northfield 2-0 to capture the outright Big Nine Conference championship. The teams tied their early season match up in Northfield. The Huskies ended their season 12-0-1 in the league and 15-8-2 overall.
The Raiders won the conference title last season, their third straight. OHS and Northfield shared the title in the 2019-20 season. This season's title is the Huskies ninth overall. Playoffs begin Wednesday, February 9.
The 2-0 win Saturday was the Huskies ninth shutout of the season and third straight. Ava Wolfe has a school-record 20 shutouts for her career. Samantha Bogen scored 2:53 into the first period. Izzy Radel doubled Owatonna's lead 2:25 into the third period.
OHS outshot Northfield 26-24, but the Raiders had a 14-5 shot advantage in the third period. See the box score from the Minnesota Hockey Hub.
Owatonna's Big Nine girls hockey title history:
- 1996-97 (the first year of Big Nine girls hockey)
- 1997-98 (sharing the title with Rochester Mayo and Mankato East/West coop)
- 2009-10 (shared with Mayo)
- 2019-20 (shared with Northfield)
Only Rochester Mayo with ten conference championships has more than Owatonna.
MANKATO WEST WINS BIG NINE GYMNASTICS TITLE, BARELY
Owatonna won three of the four events, had two individual conference champs and set a school record on the floor exercise. Yet Mankato West edged the Huskies in the final team standings to capture their fourth overall Big Nine title and end Owatonna's six-year reign atop the league.
West scored 143.425 to Owatonna's 143.400 at Rochester Century High School Saturday, February 5. Northfield was third with 136.850.
Owatonna won the vault (37.525-37.325 over West), balance beam (33.6-33.525) and floor (38.550-38.275). West won the uneven bars (34.3-33.675).
The Huskies' Emma Johnson won the floor exercise with 9.8. Teammate Kendra Miller was first on the balance beam with 9.075.
