On Tuesday evening, there were 14 block parties celebrating the Night to Unite throughout Faribault, and I intended to get to more than just one.

However I had so much fun at the Buckham Center that time got away from me and before I knew it the party was over.

The turnout was excellent with more than 300 served food, which included the all-American hot dog, some kind of flat bread that was gone by the time I ate and a Somali food item called sambusa.

The sambusa I remembered from last year, and it was delicious. It's a stuffed triangular pastry, a very popular appetizer that can have all kinds of fillings.

The sambusa at the Buckham Center block party had ground beef, lots of onions and some spices that gave it a little heat. I thought it was just the right amount; I typically don't like really hot food.

A recipe on the table included these ingredients: onions, green chili, coriander, cumin, cardamon, salt, pepper, garlic and cilantro. Mayor John Jasinski told me he tried to make it at home and it didn't come out anything like the delicious food we enjoyed at the block party.

Popcorn was freshly popped and also a popular item at the event.

Relativity, a band with Dr. Mike Hildebrandt and a couple of his relatives, performed and there were Cambodian folk dance and Somali dance demonstrations.

It was fun to see people of all ethnic backgrounds enjoying the day with each other. Truly a Night to Unite.
