National Apple Pie Day
Sunday was Mothers Day. Rightly so, there was a lot of attention (and reminders) to remember our Moms on Sunday. Not receiving as much attention, Sunday was also National Apple Pie Day! I guess you could almost day I am "normal" because apple pie is my favorite dessert, with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream of course. Apple pie is also American's favorite dessert.
The first apple pie recipe was printed in England in 1831. It included "good apples, good spices, figs, raisins, saffron and cofyn" a type of pastry crust. There are many special apple pie recipes families have passed down for generations. I have tasted a number of those when I had the privilege of judging the apple pie contest a few years ago at the Rice County Fair.
During the turn of the 20th century when whole toasted cereals were becoming the "health food" fad, pie gained a bad reputation as not being a healthy nutritious food. Apple pie kind of "saved the day" because we all know apples are very nutritious for your diet!
