Duluth is considering adding a fee to plastic and paper bags. The idea was brought up on Monday at a Duluth City Council Meeting. It would add a 5 cent fee to paper and plastic bags.

Heather Strasser is the sales manager at Loll Designs, an outdoor furniture supplier in Duluth. She told WCCO, “'We need to show that Duluth, like many other states and counties across the country, is not falling behind on addressing climate change.'”

WCCO did report that this fee would be exempt from anyone using the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) programs.

I think that this is an awesome idea and other cities should do the same. The option is still there to use a paper or plastic bag if you need to, but it incentivizes people to bring their own bags.

The Duluth City Council's next meeting is in October and they might pass this fee on plastic and paper bags at that meeting.
