Minnehaha Wins 4th Consecutive State Title
The Minnehaha Academy Redhawks thorougly dominated the Alexandria Cardinals 80-29 to win the Class AAA State title Saturday in downtown Minneapolis. Senior 7'1 Chet Holmgren closed out his high school career with 18 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists.
The Redhawks became the fourth school in Minnesota history to win four consecutive state championships. One couldn't help but think it more than likely would have been 5 consecutive titles had COVID-19 not taken last year's tournament away.
Minnehaha did not lose to a Minnesota school all season. Their only loss came against national powerhouse IMG Academy. They finished the season 20-1.
Holmgren's performance was impressive because the Cardinals doubled and triple teamed him, got physical with him but he didn't force the issue. He finished the game 7 of 8 shooting, 2 for 2 from three point range, 2 of 3 at the free throw line. He was the concensus national high school player of the year.
No word yet on where he'll take his talents to play college basketball.
Senior, 6'2 Hercy Miller led the Redhawks with 24 points on 10 of 14 shooting, 2 of 3 from beyond the arc, 2 for 2 in free throws. Little brother, freshman 6'2 Mercy Miller added 15 points, leading the team with 3, three point baskets.
The score at halftime was 36-20. Minnehaha ran away in the second half 44-9.
The Redhawks dominated the paint scoring 40 points there. Fast break points favored Minnehaha Academy 24-0.
Alexandria finished their season 22-2. They shot 21 percent from field, 14 percent from three point range while Minnehaha connected on 55 percent for their shots, 39 percent from beyond the arc.
Neither team put on a free throw shooting clinic. The Cardinals finished 1 for 4, Redhawks were 7 of 13 from the charity stripe.
Minnehaha cleaned the glass 48 to 28 and finished with 19 assists on 32 field goals.
Alexandria junior guard Kristen Hoskins has given a verbal commitment to play football at the University of Minnesota. He is a wide receiver.
