It was nice to see so many people at the Memorial Day program this morning at Central Park in Faribault. Memorial Day is so much more than a three-day weekend. Not that I am opposed to having fun, boating, grilling and families getting together, but sometimes the real meaning of Memorial Day gets lost. It was also nice to see younger people there, including the Faribault High School and Bethlehem Academy bands playing patriotic selections.

Honored combat veteran Jim Munson spoke about visiting the cemetery where many of his relatives are buried. He said he goes to visit the graves as a way to honor them. About 20 paces away are the graves of two of his high school classmates and buddies he served with in Vietnam. Jim read the dates of their birth and death on their grave markers. They were born in 1950 and died in 1970. They were killed in action in Vietnam when they were 20 years old. Remembering all those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom is what today Memorial Day is all about!
