Early every month I call Tom Hoverstad Scientist at the Southern research and Outreach Center at Waseca (SROC) who keeps track of the weather. I was excited to talk with Tom this month as it seemed like we enjoyed really nice weather in March! While February 2021 was much colder than normal March reverted back to the trend of many months in a row of warmer than normal. March 2021 was 7 degrees above normal.

March 2021 was just a touch dryer than normal with 8.5 inches of snow and 2.41 inches of precipitation  We have plenty of soil moisture to germinate and get the crop growing this spring. With the warmer temperatures ice out on Clear Lake in Waseca occurred on March 27 while the median ice out date is April 2. Not surprising the frost left the soil earlier than normal too on March 12.

Looking at the 6 to 10 day forecast Tom said he thought farmers would be planting small grain next week, start applying fertilizer and the week of the 12th maybe some farmers will begin to plant corn! Click on the link and listen to Tom discuss the March 2021 weather.
