[Listen} May Weather Another Record Tom Hoverstad SROC
When we flip the calander to a new month I always give Tom Hoverstad who is a Scientist at the Southern Research and Outreach Center at Waseca a call. Tom writes the Weekly Weather and Crop Update during the growing season and keeps track of the weather data from their official weather station. The first half of May was cool and dry. The second half normal temperatures but very wet. There was one significant weather event in May that set an all time record.
On Mother's Day weekend temperatures were below freezing for 9 hours with very little crop damage! In addition an all time record was set for the lowest high temperature for the day. Tom felt there was little crop damage because the soil temperature at the 2 inch depth was 45 degrees. The soil was still warm and the corn and soybeans were small and very close to the ground yet.
