Kenyon-Wanamingo Wins Homecoming Mud Bowl

The Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights defeated the Faribault Bethlehem Academy Cardinals 20-7 Friday night in a Homecoming mud game.  By the end of the game the center portion of the field was a slimy mess.

A couple of the BA players told KDHL during the Faribault Coaches Show at Bashers Restaurant they had fun sliding around in the mud.  Sophomore Charles King and senior Eliot Smith were guests with Head Coach Jim Beckmann.  The two players were Malecha's Auto Body Faribault players of the game along with Cardinals quarterback Bo Dienst.

I chose the 12 seniors to be our Held Bus Service Knights of the game.  Owen Hilke and Carter Quam had exceptional games on defense with multiple tackles in the game.

It was a excellent high school football game to broadcast in what I affectionately have called "The Moat" over the years.

The Knights scored on their first series of the game when the Cardinals stuffed them on back to back runs senior quarterback Luke Berg stepped back and fired a perfect over the shoulder pass to junior receiver Trevor Steberg for a 63 yard touchdown.  Steberg never had to break stride on the play.

The extra point kick by junior Jonathan Navas was no good.

With 8:38 to go in the first half Cardinals senior quarterback Bo Dienst hit tight end sophomore 6'6 Charles King on a 14 yard touchdown pass.  The extra point kick by Eliot Smith was good.

It appeared Bethlehem Academy would have the lead going into halftime. Might even add to it before a fumble was scooped up by junior Kenyon-Wanamingo player Laden Nerison who ran about 70 yards for the go-ahead score with 47 seconds left in the half.  The two point conversion run was not successful.

The halftime score was 12-7.

Kenyon-Wanamingo got another over the shoulder in stride pass from Berg to Steberg in the first series of the second half to take the team down to the BA 11 yard line.  The Cardinals held them out of the end zone and took the ball over at the 10.

The field conditions got muddier as the game went on with teams unable to literally get any traction.  The Knights scored with 3:14 to go in the game on a 17 yard run by senior Tyler Craig.  Berg got the two point conversion on a keeper behind senior 275 pound center Armani Tucker.

The very next series Craig recorded a interception.  The final offensive series for the Cardinals also ended with an interception by Steberg.

Bethlehem Academy statistics had Kenyon-Wanamingo with 190 yards of total offense with the two Berg to Steberg connections accounting for 109 of those yards.

Berg finished with 6 completions for 165 yards.  3 completions to Casey Wesbur for 34 yards.  One to Nerison for 22 yards.  Cardinals junior defensive back Jax Bokman recorded a interception.

The Knights Craig ran 19 times for 62 yards.  K-W did an outstanding job corralling BA running back Brady Strodtman.  The junior had 3 TD's and over 200 yards last week at Hayfield but was held to no scores and 89 yards on 25 carries in the slop in Kenyon.

The Homecoming King was Carter Quam, Queen Hailey Lerfald.

Kenyon-Wanamingo (2-1) goes to Randolph Friday night for the Rockets homecoming football game.  Randolph is undefeated following a 14-12 win over Hayfield Friday afternoon at Triton High School in Dodge Center.

It was supposed to be Randolph's homecoming but after moving the game due to field conditions to the artificial surface the Rockets decided to move their homecoming also.

Bethlehem Academy (1-2) hosts Medford (2-1) Friday night at Bruce Smith Field in Faribault in the "Battle for the Paddle" rivalry trophy game.  The Tigers scored an impressive 14-6 win over Goodhue Saturday.

The game will be broadcast on KDHL Radio, 920 AM.  Coverage starts 6:45 p.m.
