Kane Brown is going back to his cover song roots.

The country singer-songwriter recently posted a cover of Thomas Rhett's "Die a Happy Man" on YouTube, and for 15 seconds showcases his deep vocals on his own interpretation of the song. Seated beside a guitarist, the two harmonize the chorus of Rhett's multi-week No. 1 song, which won Single of the Year at the CMA Awards and is nominated for Best Country Song at the 2017 Grammy Awards. Brown released his debut self-titled album in December, but was a success long before the record became available to fans. The singer quit the third season of X Factor because he didn’t want to be part of a boy band and after his break, he began to post videos of himself singing cover songs, often from his bedroom or a bathroom, to Facebook. In an interview with Taste of Country, Kane admits that he didn’t have expectations or a business plan at the time.

“I was happy if I got 60 likes on my stuff, and then one morning I woke up and had 800 friend requests,” he says softly. “I accepted them. Seven hundred more [requests] came through … and then after that I was like, ‘I’m gonna try to run with this. Maybe I can get internet famous.’”

Later, his cover of George Strait’s “Check Yes or No” was viewed more than 10 million times. Meanwhile, the number of followers on his personal Facebook page grew from the hundreds to the hundreds of thousands to over two million. His success only continues as his debut album — which came out on Dec. 2 — hit No. 1 on Billboard‘s Top Country Albums chart and Top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart with 45,000 in album sales. As a result, he earned the best-selling debut country album of the past two years and the largest country debut for a new artist since Sam Hunt’s Montevallo in 2014.
