Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester woman has been given a jail sentence for driving drunk and causing a crash last year that resulted in serious injuries.

According to Olmsted County court records, 20-year-old Fathi Issa Araye was driving a vehicle that was found overturned underneath a bridge in the median of East Circle Drive near the railroad tracks and Silver Creek last April. She was later charged with two counts of criminal vehicular operation.

Police Detected Odor of Alcohol

According to the criminal complaint, the odor of alcohol was detected coming from the driver and the vehicle. Testing of a blood sample obtained from Araye following the crash measured her blood alcohol concentration at .082.

The court document says a total of five people, ranging in age from 20 to 34 years old, were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The investigation determined the vehicle was traveling north when it smashed into a guardrail and rolled after entering the median.

Victim Ejected and Seriously Injured

Responding officers found a man, who was apparently ejected during the crash, unconscious near the vehicle. Officers reported the man had labored breathing and was unable to speak when he initially regained consciousness.

The criminal complaint says another person was also found outside the vehicle, while three people were trapped inside. A man trapped in the vehicle suffered an apparent broken arm, a shoulder injury, and fractured ribs.

Plea Agreement

Araye entered into a plea agreement in January and admitted to one of the felony charges. She was sentenced today to 90 days in jail and four years on probation. The sentencing order indicates that she will be allowed to serve the jail sentence on weekends, with work-release privileges and through participation in the Sentenced to Serve program.
