Man in Crisis Shot and Killed by Rochester Police After Grabbing for Officer's Gun, Police Say

Officers and a social worker from the Crisis Response Team (CRT) were sent to the scene in the 1900 block of Ashland Dr. in northwest Rochester around 9:30 p.m. and spoke with the man.

It was determined that he was a threat to himself and others. The man was placed on a 72-hour emergency hold, according to preliminary information released by the police department.

A struggle broke out while officers were attempting to bring the man into custody, Grayson said.

During the struggle, the man grabbed a hold of an officer’s firearm. He was then shot by another officer, police say.

Officers and paramedics rendered aid to the man. He was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Grayson.

The names of the man and the officer involved in the shooting have not been released.

Rochester Police requested the BCA’s Force Investigation Unit to conduct an investigation into the deadly shooting. Grayson says that is standard procedure when officers use deadly force.
