Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held today to celebrate the grand opening of a new affordable housing complex for Olmsted County residents who are 55 and older.

The Trailside Apartments on Mayowood Road Southwest include 36 below-market-rate rental units. A news release from Olmsted County says all tenants will pay rent equal to 30% of their income.

Trailside Apartments Project Backed by State, Federal Funds

The $12.8 million housing project received state and federal funding, along with support from Olmsted County, the Olmsted County Housing and Redevelopment Authority, the City of Rochester, and the Coalition for Rochester Area Housing.

“Trailside Apartments is a testament to what we can accomplish when we come together with a shared purpose,” said Olmsted County Housing Director David Dunn. “This development reflects our commitment to creating inclusive, sustainable housing that supports older adults and strengthens our community.”

Sustainable Features: Solar Panels and Geothermal Systems

The apartment complex features 30 one-bedroom units and six two-bedroom apartments. Amenities include a community room and space for group activities and events, along with outdoor patios offering scenic views of the nearby Zumbro River. Laundry facilities are available on each floor, and the building is equipped with an elevator.

The ribbon-cutting announcement also notes that the building is equipped with rooftop solar panels and uses geothermal heating and cooling.

The first residents of the new apartment complex are expected to move in near the end of this month.
