Many people have a soft spot for pets. My wife and I have 4 pets, one dog and three cats. At times it can be frustrated to have that much fur in the house, and one of the pets always seems to be underfoot or up to no good. At the end of the day, I'd never want anything bad to happen to our pets, nor would I want to eat one of our pets. Today the House passed a law that would prohibit the slaughter of dogs and cats for the purpose of human consumption in the United States (which is still legal in 44 states including MN).

I never had any idea that you could eat a dog or a cat in MN. I was horrified and sad at the same time. Now I'm not saying that there are people going around and taking pets from backyards to eat them, but the thought of someone raising cats or dogs for the purpose of food makes me feel uneasy.

In a Facebook post on his political page, State Rep. Tom Emmer had this to say about the bill.

From the website DogTime.com "California, Georgia, Hawaii, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia are the only states that explicitly outlawed dog meat. It is, however, illegal in all states for slaughterhouses to handle dogs, and it’s illegal for stores to sell the meat." But that doesn't stop an individual from the practice at a farmers market or selling the meat online.

The bill which you track its progress here is expected to move on to the Senate next.
