The Owatonna boys hockey team won their fifth straight and stayed unbeaten in the Big Nine with a 2-0 win at Northfield Tuesday. Zach Wiese stopped 21 shots, including several point blank chances on Raider power plays. Sam Sampson scored his first varsity goal early in the game. Dom Valento added some insurance late in the third period.

OHS coach Josh Storm commented after the game, "They are big rivals for us. I think them and Century are probably are biggest Big Nine rivals. And it was a fun game, highly contested, had great goal tending tonight and that paid off for us."

In six games, the 5-1 Huskies have only given up just eight total goals, and not more than one since a season-opening loss at Apple Valley.

Sampson, a junior, slammed home the opening volley of the game at 2:23 of the first period on a puck popped out front by junior Zach Kirsh. It was the first point for each player on the season. It's the second straight game Owatonna has scored early. They notched a goal on the first shift of Saturday's 4-1 win at Chanhassen.

The Huskies penalty continued to shine, holding Northfield to 0-for-5 on the power play. That included 38 seconds of 5-on-3 early in the second period. Owatonna has killed 17 of 18 power play efforts of their opponents.

Moments after a penalty kill late in the game, Wyatt Oldenfendt and Valento sprinted up the ice on a 2-on-1. Oldenfendt made a nice feed to Valento for his third goal and team-leading 13th point of the season. It was Oldenfendt's first assist and fourth point of the campaign.

The teams will get a rematch January 30 at Four Seasons in Owatonna. The Huskies and Raiders have split their season series each of the last three seasons. Northfield joins Owatonna in Section 1AA this winter, adding big seeding implications to their rivalry.

OHS skates at Tartan Thursday, December 19 at 7 pm with coverage on Kat Kountry 105.

In other sports Tuesday, Northfield blanked the OHS girls hockey team 4-0. The Raiders are the final team with an unbeaten conference mark. The OHS boys basketball squad won at Red Wing 71-58. The No. 4 rated Wingers beat the Huskies girls hoops team 74-39.
