The CME grain markets will close at 12:05 pm Thursday and of course will be closed Friday Christmas Day. The grain markets will reopen Sunday evening at the normal time for the overnight session. The livestock markets will also close at 12:05 pm Thursday and will reopen at the normal time Monday morning. I did check and all Minnesota USDA Service Centers and Farm Service Agency offices will be closed both Thursday and Friday. They will reopen at normal time Monday morning. Both Thursday and Friday are holidays for all University of Minnesota Extension staff too.

Typically when you get close to a major holiday the ag markets get very quiet with really low volume. If there is some type of major unexpected news they can get really zippy due to the light volume. This year there are a lot of factors that could make for an exciting couple of days. Those include the dry weather and crop concerns in South America, the dock workers strike in Argentina, the huge export demand from China for beans, pork and corn, and the already really projected bean carryover in the United States.

Maybe it will be really quiet today and Thursday but it seems like the potential is much higher this year for some exciting market action!
