I think it is safe to say just about every combine has at least one fire extinguisher in the cab. Many have another mounted so it can be accessed from the ground. Driving down the interstate I see on the cab of semi-tractors Fire Extinguisher Inside. However, how many farmers or semi drivers have ever used a fire extinguisher on a real fire in an emergency? I suspect more knowledge is needed than "pull the pin and squeeze the trigger?"

Wednesday afternoon from 12:00 to 2:00 pm the Faribault Fire Department, Community Coop Oil in Faribault and University of Minnesota Extension Service will be hosting a Farm Safety Field Day on the Rice County Fairgrounds in Faribault. With the help of the Faribault Fire Department you will be trained on how to use a fire extinguisher on a live fire. In addition there will be training on using a trauma first aid kit and practice with a tourniquet. Plus, you can learn more about using and calibrating gas monitors.

At the end of the Farm Safety Field Day you can receive a free fire extinguisher, first aid trauma kit and a single or multi-gas monitor if you have a need for one. Not only are all these safety items free but the program begins with a free lunch at noon too! Special thank you to Kelly and Community Coop Oil Association in Faribault, the Faribault Fire Department and Claire LaCanne at the Rice and Steele County Extension Office.

It is nice to have a number to plan for the lunch so please let Kelly know at the Community Coop Oil Association or call Claire LaCanne 507-332-6109. If at the last minute it works and you can come on Wednesday, as Claire said "just show up, we would never turn someone away."
