One of my favorite events to cover for KDHL each year is the Goodhue County Volunteer Senior Citzens of the Year program during the fair in Zumbrota.

There was no event last year.  2019 Male Senior Ray McNamara of Goodhue was in attendance and so was 2018 Goodhue County Volunteer Senior Citizen of the Year honoree Ray Sands of Kenyon.

Goodhue County Fair Board member Darla Vieths made the announcements to a packed crowd in the Beer Garden.

First Vieths explained Goodhue County requires the person receiving the award to be over 70 years of age.

Then she announced the female Goodhue County Outstanding Senior Volunteer Award for 2021 was going to Cheryl Kyllo of Goodhue.

Vieths told the crowd she nominated Kyllo for the award and was not part of the panel of judges who chose her.  Vieths stated in the letter, "I have known Cheryl for over 30 years, and admire all she does for her family, her church and all of  the community. Cheryl volunteers with the Zumbrota-Mazeppa schools.  Cheryl is very active in her church, Minneola Lutheran Church and her community."

"Cheryl is very humble about all of her projects and volunteering," Vieths added saying,  "Recently Cheryl established the Minneola Neighborhood Kitchen which reaches out to anyone in the area that needs a little help with groceries."

"It can be older, younger, at-risk, isolated.  Cheryl organizes and participates in the humanitarian trips to Baha.  She did that in 2014 and 2017 and in Las Cruces, New Mexico in 2019.  Cheryl helped in an orphanage, was part of a team that built a home in a week."

"When Cheryl returned from the trip she made presentations on their activities to bring awareness to happenings elsewhere in the world.  Cheryl opens her home to montlhy Bible studies, Cheryl and her family host the annual Church at the Barn Worship Service.  The Kyllos have hosted Barn Dances and other fundraising activities to help raise funds for the youth to attend the trips."

Minneola Lutheran Church Pastor Hannah read her letter of endorsement for Cheryl to be chosen the female Senior Volunteer of the Year.

Former News Record and Zumbro Shopper of Zumbrota owner Dave Grimsrud of Zumbrota is the male recipient.  A long list of items was read concerning his community activities.

Grimsrud thanked the Fair Board for the selection and said, "I really appreciate this.  I must say working in the newspaper and years ago coaching basketball, everything is team work.  This is really appreciated but most things I've done have involved other people.  Team work.  As far as being involved in art, it's really fun.  I like to golf, I like to do artwork and that's kind of where I'm at.  Thank you."

Dave's son Pete read the plaque and made the presentation.  The whole family was there to share in the announcement.

Grimsrud and Kyllo will represent Goodhue County at the State Fair.

Ray McNamara said he had a good time in 2019 representing Goodhue County at the State Fair.

Here is some interesting information.

Stacker used data from the 2020 County Health Rankings to rank every state's average life expectancy from lowest to highest. The 2020 County Health Rankings values were calculated using mortality counts from the 2016-2018 National Center for Health Statistics. The U.S. Census 2019 American Community Survey and America's Health Rankings Senior Report 2019 data were also used to provide demographics on the senior population of each state and the state's rank on senior health care, respectively.

Read on to learn the average life expectancy in each state.
