he USDA announced there will be a general Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) signup in early 2021. It will be a "competitive" signup which means the more conservation practices land owners volunteer to adopt the more likely their bid will be accepted. If accepted land owners will receive an annual payment from the USDA for devoting their environmentally sensitive land to conservation practices.

The CRP program began in 1985 during the worst of the farm crisis. The plan was to take environmentally sensitive land out of grain production and also help protect the environment. It seems to me like CRP is one of the most popular and well received conservation programs I can remember! In this general CRP signup new land is eligible and land currently enrolled with expiring contracts would also be eligible to be reenrolled.

The signup for this General CRP will be from January 4, 2021 through February 21, 2021. If you have some land you would be interested in enrolling in the CRP begin by contacting your local USDA Farm Service Agency office. You will also end up working with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) developing your conservation plan. This takes time so if you are interested start the process soon!
