Faribault voters went to the polls Tuesday and elected a new mayor and two new city council members.

Two present members of the cIty council were running for mayor. Kevin Voracek came out on top with 4,603 votes cast for him and 4,033 votes for Janna Viscomi.

The election now means there is an open seat on the council.

During our AM Minnesota interviews with the candidates, most said they would favor appointing the top vote recipient to the position with the understanding they would not run in the next election.

Seven people ran for three seats on the Faribault City Council.

Incumbent Steve Underdahl received the most votes with 4,868. Royal Ross came in next with 3,308 followed by Elizabeth Cap with 3,148.

The remainder of the vote went like this, incumbent John Rowan, 2,815 votes; Tom Spooner, 2,386; George Wickstrom Jr., 1,909; and Adam Gibbons, 1,489.

The unofficial turnout was 89 percent across Faribault. The percentage will drop because the numbers provided by the Rice County Auditor/Treasurer's office do not include the number of voters that register the day of the election.

I personally saw a very long line of people at the Buckham Center on Tuesday afternoon waiting to register while I was going to each precinct checking on voter turnout.
